Dialysis is a procedure toremove waste products and excess fluid from the bloodwhen the kidneys stop working properly. It often involves diverting blood to a machine to be cleaned.
Haemodialysis is the most common type of dialysis. During the procedure,a tube is attached to a needle in your arm. Blood passes along the tube and into an external machine that filters it, before it's passed back intothe arm along another tube. This is usually carried out 3 days a week, with each session lasting around 4 hours.
Peritoneal dialysis involves surgery to implant a peritoneal dialysis (PD) catheter into yourabdomen. The catheter helps filter your blood through the peritoneum, a membrane in your abdomen. During treatment, a special fluid called dialysate flows into the peritoneum. The dialysate absorbs waste. Once the dialysate draws waste out of the bloodstream, it’s drained from your abdomen.
